Turning Lemons into Lessons
In a heartwarming display of community spirit and entrepreneurial learning, the students of Grade 3 have raised an impressive $8,000 for the charity Pencils of Promise through a lemonade stand project. Inspired by the story of Milton Hershey and his philanthropic efforts, the students decided to use their own initiative and creativity to make a difference in the world.
The project, which was part of the students’ final assessment, was a fantastic learning opportunity. They not only learned about teamwork and how to run a business, but also about the importance of giving to others. The students were responsible for setting up the lemonade stand, making the lemonade, and promoting their cause to the local community. They learned valuable lessons about marketing, customer service, and financial management along the way.
The charity Pencils of Promise was chosen by the students because of its mission to provide quality education to children in developing countries. The $8,000 raised will go towards building schools, providing educational resources, and training teachers in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities. The students were thrilled to be able to make a tangible difference in the lives of other children their age.

The success of the lemonade stand has shown that even young children can make a significant impact on the world around them when they work together and set their minds to a goal. The experience has instilled in the students a sense of social responsibility and a desire to continue making a difference in the future.
Beyond the financial success of the project, the students have gained valuable life skills that will serve them well in the future. They have learned the importance of collaboration, communication, and hard work. They have also developed a sense of empathy and compassion, understanding that not everyone is as fortunate as they are. These are important lessons that will stay with them for years to come.
It was also great to see the whole school community, the kindergarten, elementary , and high school supporting the Grade 3 students’ lemonade stand project by purchasing lemonade. This collective support was crucial in making the project a success and demonstrated the power of community in achieving a common goal.
The Grade 3 students’ dedication and determination to make a difference in the world is a testament to the power of education and the potential of young minds. As they move on to the next chapter of their education, they will carry with them the lessons learned from this project and the knowledge that they can make a difference in the world.
